The attached article, Cavanaugh (1989), although written in 1989, discusses the history of turnover research and differences in methodology. One issue he brings up is the importance of comparing non-nursing turnover with that seen in nursing. The reasoning is because nursing research methodology is often adopted from non-nursing research, and when studying a specific facility, comparing non-nursing positions can give further insight into the problem.

Both articles from your assignment provide cross-sectional descriptive analysis of turnover. The studies both appear to be based on quantitative, statistical analysis of only nurses. Looking at the article I attached, and a few that I skimmed through Abstracts for, this type of analysis might be effective for a targeted site, but when used across various locations, conflicting information is seen. A couple reasons for this might be 1) the problem is site specific, or 2) each site or research project defines the variables differently.

Instead of doing a cross-sectional study on only nurses, it might be more helpful to view other workers in a facility. Is turnover high throughout the facility, or is it only the nursing specific jobs? When comparing results to other research, are the definitions of the variables the same? Is there a similar facility with much lower turnover? These are all questions that can help define a future research question to explore.

Other methods that might be useful is a co-hort design to look at incidence rates during a specific time frame. The co-hort could be one facility vs another, or could be one nursing position vs another (i.e. RN vs CNA). …
