Homeless families need the basics, such as shelter, clothing, food and water. They might also need financial support, and/or help in finding a job (assuming they do not have one). They may also need medical support, depending on how long they have been living in the car, and under what conditions. For example, some people are very resilient and use public washing facilities and eat in public soup kitchens (free). While other people let them selves go or are too proud to ask for the help they need. However, the longer one stays homeless, the more help they eventually require. They may also need help establishing spiritual/religious support and family support as well. So what is better, the traditional “transitional housing”, or “permanent rental housing” approach in helping homeless people to meet their essential needs? There is ample evidence that the latter, combined with case management, has better outcomes. In fact, many of the needs and supports mentioned above are already in place in the community. These programs work, which is evidence that the needs that are being met through the programs are indeed the needs of the homeless to be addressed.
