Conducting research on any human, and in particular children, has long been an ethically gray area that has left many in the academic community at differing ends of the spectrum. On the one hand, there is the argument to be made that advances in human psychology do depend, to a certain extent, on our ability to conduct research on vulnerable populations. On the other side, there is the ethical argument to be made that all humans, regardless of how unique or different they might be, deserve to be held to the same ethical standard when it comes to any form of scientific and psychological research. As you are probably aware, psychologists use to be given a fair amount of latitude in terms of human experimentation, as is the case with Genie and with the more contemporary group research examples, such as the Stanford Prison simulation.
