Problems faced by working students

With the ever escalating cost of higher education, having parents settle school fee, accommodation, and pocket money makes a huge difference. Unfortunately, only a few are lucky to have such parents who are able and willing to support them through college education. For the vast majority, they have to get educational loans and look for a job to support themselves. Although there are provisions made to facilitate learning for those who are working, it is still challenging and conceivably one of the busiest and draining moments in one’s life.

You never have enough time

It there is one issue all higher education students can easily relate to, it is the massive amount of research and reading one has to do. I mean, it never ends. Covering the relevant materials for the course is important, but the fact of the matter is there are too many texts and concepts and too little time. A full-time student struggles to create enough time to read; a working student find it completely difficult to juggle work and education.

In fact, if we are discussing time, there is never sufficient time for anything anyway. Every moment of your day is accounted for, down to seconds. You wake up, run to your work station, cover your shift, then run to school to catch your daily class, and after that, you can relax, right? Wrong! Now you have to read 5 books, write 3 essays and study overnight for your continuous assessment tests. You never get the time to do all that.

 You start losing weight

When you are too stressed to eat or you hardly have time to do it, losing weight is inevitable. Between covering your shift at work, running to class and studying thoroughly so you pass your exams, feeding becomes a privilege of some sort, a special treat, if you will. Routinely done while reading, in traffic or at midnight, eating becomes rare, which prompts your friends and family to make comments about your changing body at thanksgiving.

You never sleep

Now, this is a serious concern – sleep deprivation is common among students, but for the working students, the struggle is real. Being sleepy and exhausted all the time, messing up at work, and falling asleep in class becomes part of you. While this may be considered normal in college, it becomes a serious challenge when you are also required to cover more than 20 hours at work on weekly basis. Juggling work and education is probably the closest one come to understanding the life of a mother with a newborn, so it does, in a way, prepare one for life, right?

All work and no play

All work without play ends badly as taught by Jack Nicholson and Stephen King. Chances are you will be in a good position to give quite a relevant impression of this saying by the end of your college education. Your social life will be in a mess or totally non-existent, but this is something you have face head on. Cheer up, you will have enough time to enjoy life after college, that is, if you are not already dead inside.
