As an ARNP, working closely with obese children, within an outpatient setting, the interviewee acknowledged both autonomy and collaboration. Although her practiced is primarily in a clinic setting, the practitioner also holds hospital privileges. After practicing in the healthcare system for over 30 years, in varying roles and areas, this ARNP considered herself accepted, as a professional, by both nursing and medical personnel. In comparison, the population health discipline is relatively new in Northern Iowa, concentrating primarily on patients suffering from chronic disease, such as diabetes and/or congestive heart failure. Although a population health coach works more closely with the supervising physician, he or she is granted an ample degree of autonomy in his or her practice. A population health APN may potentially follow children and adults from varying genders, races, and ethnicity, an APN has been well trained in the management of a diverse population.
Understanding and including one’s own beliefs and values, reading, examining, and mingling with these populations, also prepares any professional nurse. Even though she receives support from others, she frequently experiences animosity from physicians, noting never truly feeling treated as a colleague, in the actual sense.
As a practitioner or a population health coach, both APNs considered other nurses at any level, and physicians within the same discipline, as her peers. Over the course of their professional careers, increased confidence, trust, and knowledge were the commonalities with evolving roles. The confidence and trust originates with oneself, then, includes that of her co-workers and physicians, but mostly from her patients.
