Introduction

The United States population is becoming considerably more racially and ethnically diverse and the minority population will continue to rise. Hispanics make up a rapidly growing proportion of the United States and they contribute to the health of the nation (Velasco-Mondragon, Jimenez, Palladino-Davis, Davis , & Escamilla-Cejudo, 2016). Not only are the hispanics the second largest ethnic group, but they are the fastest growing group in the United States.

It is vital to understand the racial and ethnic groups to provide adequate treatments and prevention programs (Dilworth-Anderson, Pierre , & Hilliard, 2012). Population Statistics There are about 55.3 million Hispanics in the United States, which comprises about 17.3% of the population.

The majority of the Hispanic population that speak Spanish in the United States is 72.9%, 16.2% lack health insurance and 21.4% live in poverty. Similarly, the village of Patchogue located in suburban Long Island, hispanics are the second largest racial/ethnic group.

The largest group is causations at 57.7%, followed by hispanics at 32.8%, which has been consistent since 2005, making the most common non-English language Spanish. In 2017, the median household income in Patchogue, NY is $68,117 and 15.1% of the population is below the poverty line.

In the village of Patchogue, 18.9% of people under the age of 65 lack health insurance 72% of people speak Spanish in the household (The United States Census Bureau website, n.d.).
