Concept Map Case Scenario Peter Griffin is a 66-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with sudden shortness of breath and left-sided chest pain, which he says is worse when he breathes in deeply. The triage nurse notes that Peter is leaning on his right leg, and he explains that four days ago, he had a minor motorcycle accident that crushed his left thigh but did not break bones. Since the accident, he has not been walking and has been resting on the couch at home, but noticed a tenderness in his left calf whose onset and location are separate from his motorcycle accident. The triage nurse takes his vitals which reveal a BP of 93/60 mmHg and O₂ saturation of 92% on room air.

The patient is diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolism caused by a deep vein thrombosis (in the left leg).
