Eating disorders are severe disturbances in eating behavior characterized by preoccupation with weight concerns and unhealthy efforts to control weight. From a psychological point of view eating disorders are caused by multiple determinants associated with influences such as: (a) genetic vulnerability, (b) personality factors, (c) cultural values, and (d) and cognitive factors.

Genetics- studies show that genetics play a large role in eating disorders. As an example, genetically linked to eating disorders is the psychopathology associated with schizophrenia. Other studies show that relatives of patients with eating disorders are also disposed to the disorder (Pinel, 2003).

Personality factors-research suggests that personality traits increase one’s vulnerability to eating disorders such as Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa. For example, anorexic patients tend to be obsessive, rigid, and emotionally restrained, and bulimic patients tend to be impulsive and overly sensitive, (Wonderlich, 2002). In addition, from a social/psychological perspective, research indicates that Western cultural values are stated to influence heavily on the tendency for eating disorders. The desire to be thin influenced by the media culture can result in unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders. Polivy & Herman (1987) suggests that eating disorders often originate among female with normal diets, and they later become pathological dieters.

Cognitive factors associated with eating disorders include distorted thinking and maladaptive beliefs, obsessive thoughts, and distortion of attention and/or memory (Friedman & Schustack, 2006).
