“The purpose of advocacy within the profession is to improve the social status of individuals who may be considered vulnerable or oppressed, thereby enhancing their standing within a specific social system whether it is a community, organization, service system societal institution, or society itself” (Bliss, 2014). Employment of social workers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics,2017). Employment growth will be driven by increased demand for healthcare and social services but will vary by specialty (Bureau of Labor Statistics,2017). I believe that because of the need for advocacy when fighting and defeating the oppressed is why the social work profession will continue to have a high growth percentage. Social work is a hand on approach profession that cannot be done with computers it takes a voice to defend the vulnerable and with the skill of advocacy, social workers are that voice.
