The philosophy of systems therapy is the process of understanding how things function as a whole. For instance, a systems-focused paradigm offers a view of the varied and multiple contexts in which an individual operates. Family System Therapy emerged focused on solving an individual’s problems from the perspective of the family as a unit. A Family Systems perspective holds that individuals are understood better by studying interactions between members of a family. (Bernardo, & Pernice-Duca, 2010).

The systems philosophy is grounded in assumptions that a client’s problem behavior is due to several reasons. Henry presents in counseling with multiple problems including relationship problems. One therapeutic approach in which Henry’s problem could be conceptualized is a Family System model would be focused on viewing his symptoms and pattern of habits as being perpetuated by family processes. For example, Henry appears to be tied to his cultural ties and family of origin. Thus, his symptoms are being influenced and perpetuated by family processes.
